Disinvited to TEDx Because of My Book Wall Street 50

by Kim Ann Curtin on October 8, 2012

As most of you know I’ve been working on a book that will encourage consciousness on Wall Street. I’ve been interviewing what I describe as “Conscious Financiers.” Having interviewed over 50 Wall Streeter’s who are living consciously yet as capitalists; this book will be a How-To book on how one can be both. This may sound surprising and even downright impossible. But I assure you it IS possible and it’s being done by these 50 and in fact many more!

Some of the more famous financiers I’ve interviewed are: Robert A.G. Monks, Amy Domini, Mark Thompson, Brady Dougan, Oswald Grubel, John Allison, John Whitehead, Ziad Abdelnour, Henry Kaufman, Sky Lance. Dr. Andrew Kuper, John Bogle, Josh Brown, Joe Perella, Jim Rogers, Janet Hanson, Ann Kaplan, Jason Apollo Voss, Frank Casey, Fred Wilson and Jack Schwager. Lynne Twist has also agreed to be interviewed! The updated list here: Wall Street 50

It is my intention that these stories will inspire and encourage consciousness not only on Wall Street but on Main Street as well. However I’m sure you will not be surprised if I tell you that some people (and maybe even you) are unhappy and/or frustrated about the book’s focus. One example, is that I was recently disinvited to do a TEDx talk because the message of the book is misunderstood. So in light of that I thought it’s time to stress that this book in NO WAY denies, ignores or mitigates the wrong-doing that has happened or is still happening on Wall Street.

Believe me, after all the research this past year I’ve done and books I’ve read regarding what has taken place and is still taking place, I’m even more frustrated then before, because I now understand it better.  I just believe now more than ever, it’s time to facilitate consciousness on Wall Street and I think the best way to do that is to focus on the ones who have retained their integrity and values in spite of the temptations.  What characteristics show up in these men and women? What sustains them in the storm? What do they attribute to their consciousness?

As a capitalist myself who strives to live consciously, I’m interested in having capitalistic leaders with  integrity to emulate and learn from.  I believe that the Conscious Financiers of the world are the ones who can facilitate and re-create a new Wall Street. We need to hear from them and learn how to do this.

So I write this book in the spirit of Mother Theresa’s quote, “I will never attend an anti-war rally. If you have a peace rally, invite me.” This book is my peace rally.  Please join me.

Hello Kim,

I commend you for your efforts to shine a light on the consciousness that has and does exist in the financial industry. Yes, there was and still are INDIVIDUALS who choose to behave poorly/unethically within the industry. By holding true to your values, pursuing your research and publishing your book, you will undoubtedly present a gift of perspective and consciousness.

I look forward to reading your book and seeing you interviewed many times over.

Warm regards,
Meg

I am so surprised and saddened by this. If they only knew that you and your book exemplify exactly what TEDx is trying to communicate to its audiences: be true to yourself and give to others to create a fulfilling, prosperous life for yourself. They will come to see it on their own schedule, I guess, but it is very frustrating, I am sure. What strikes me as ironic, though, is even with their incorrect assumption, TEDx never had a capitalist speak in one of its forums?
Don’t worry, your message will be heard…no doubt in my mind.
